Subject: Re: [hmbirds] Fw: Sad news - Bill Lee
We were saddened to hear about Bill Lee's passing. We met Bill sometime in 1974 just after our move to the Capital District and the start of our birding with HMBC. Our association continued until we left the area in 2016.

We went on many club trips with Bill over the years He serviced with us on the club board and with me on the trip planning committee. He and I led several club trips to Cape Ann where all learned to endure the bitter winds off the ocean at Andrews Point.

Two Bill Lee stories stick in my mind. The first involved his spotting scope which a fall caused the eye piece to be locked in at 60X . He would complain about how hard it was to use, but he would shrug off suggestions that he let the moths out of the wallet and replace the eye piece.

Prior to 9/11, birders could drive into the little parking area by the control/pump house at the Tomhannock Reservoir. Bill parked there one day, got out, and observed the waterfowl in the little bay. He looked around for his car, but it was missing. Bill finally realized that he had forgotten to set the parking brake and the car had rolled into the water. After the car was recovered, the DEC people told Bill that they wouldn't ticket him for fishing without a license as long as there were no fish in the back seat.

May Bill's memory bring peace to Christine and the rest of Bill's family.

My wife says that family have contacted Bob Yunick already, and I emailed the current club secretary, Dan Leonard, this morning as well. If anyone would like information on the memorial, they can contact me at this email address.
