Subject: [Ohio-birds] Urban Scioto, 10-26: few temperate migrants
A visit to multiple areas along the Scioto River in Columbus found
temperate migration stalled for a great many birds. Only cormorants seemed
to be taking advantage of the mild weather to move along. I stopped at
Scioto Audubon MetroPark, Long Street Dam, Watermark Lake, Quarry Lake
Apartments, Quarry Trails MetroPark, and the area below Griggs Dam. (Above
Griggs Dam was overrun by people watching a crew regatta, so I didn't bird
there.) Notables included

Waterfowl - mallards & geese in multiple places (no surprise), but also had
Green-winged Teal (4 at Scioto Audubon), Wood Ducks (9 at Long St. Dam) and
Hooded Mergansers (2 at Long St. Dam)
Cormorants - large flock of nearly 100 around the Greenlawn Dam at Scioto
Audubon; only a few elsewhere (including a high migrating flock at
Watermark Lake)
Heron,Egrets -- Great Blues at multiple spots; 7 Great Egrets still around
Scioto Audubon
Shorebirds - nothing but a few Killdeer
Gulls - small numbers of Ring-bills at several locations. 1 Herring Gull
was around Griggs Dam
Raptors - not much: 1 Red-shoulder at Scioto Audubon, 1 Red-tail & 1
Cooper's at Quarry Trails
Woodpeckers - normal numbers of resident species; also had 1 Sapsucker at
Watermark Lake
Jays - surprisingly light numbers, compared with more suburban parks that
are teeming with them
Creeper,Kinglets - 1 Brown Creeper (Griggs) and only a couple of
Ruby-cr.Kinglets
Thrushes - only small groups of Robins, but they were at many locations
Warblers - nothing but Yellow-rumps, and their numbers varied quite a bit
at different locations
Sparrows - lots of Songs and White-throated, but also had a few Fields at
Scioto Audubon
Blackbirds - a small flock of Red-winged Blackbirds was at Watermark Lake
Finches - nothing but the expected House Finches & Goldfinches
