Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Short-eared Owl @ Torrey Pines State Reserve
High flyover at 9:21 AM (10/25/2025), to the northwest of our location
(32.915103, -117.252581), estimated to be over Razor Point. I thought it
was a Red-tailed Hawk at first, then noticed the rounded head through my
binoculars and scrambled to get photos. Observed a notch on the wings not
present on a Barn Owl and was pretty sure it was a Short-eared Owl, which
the photos confirmed. The bird continued northwest out to sea until lost
from view. https://ebird.org/checklist/S281308514

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
