On this beautiful if slightly chilly morning, 13 birders walked a circuit around the Cornell Arboretum, with many trees still showing brilliant colors while others stood leafless ready for the coming winter. A non-stop stream of Ring-billed Gulls flew past on their way to breakfast at the compost piles, and many American Robins were feeding from various fruiting trees, with many calls and even songs evoking a strange spring-like soundscape. We encountered a good number of little brown flitters, including close looks at Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Black-capped Chickadees, while White-throated Sparrows, Red-breasted Nuthatches, and a fly-by Common Raven also made appearances. The sight of two workers in hazmat suits was a little alarming, until we saw the floating body of a dead Canada Goose in the pond, which they were there to pick up. Can't be too careful with the prevalence of Avian Influenza. Join us next Thursday as we explore Robinson Hollow State Forest, meeting at the Lacey Road Pond. Directions from Caroline: take 79 east past Slaterville Springs for 4 miles, turn left on Robinson Hollow Road, in 1 mile turn left onto Lacey Road, continue 1.6 miles to the pond entrance opposite a snowplow turnaround. Directions from Dryden: take 38 south for 6 miles to the village of Hartford, turn right onto Creamery Road, in 1.3 miles slight right onto Lacey Road, continue 1.1 mile to the pond entrance opposite a snowplow turnaround.
