I had 90 minutes to bird at the Cove between meeting in La Jolla today, from 1:00-2:30.
There was a large pod of dolphins feeding about a mile offshore, and they attracted about 5000 birds. About 1000 black-vented shearwaters, 6 sooty shearwaters, 1200 brown pelicans [I ran into a photographer who said that there weren’t as many pelicans this afternoon as there had been in the morning].
Lots of gulls and cormorants.
Best bird was a juvenile Sabine’s Gull only 25 yards offshore.
A handful of common and Pacific loons and surf scoters.
If you are going on Saturday’s mini-pelagic or trying to get to Robb Field environs, know that I-5 heading North will be closed from Mission Bay to La Jolla [I don’t know the exact limit of the closure], which means there will be no access to Sea World Drive from the south. When this happened several weeks ago, access to Mission Bay on auxiliary roads was a nightmare, so plan an alternate route and give yourselves extra time.
