Saturday morning I spent a little time at Lake Jocelyn along with Steve and Dawn Hovey and Eunice Schroeder. There was a nice assortment of Shorebirds including a Pectoral Sandpiper and we were treated to good views of both a Juvenile Sora and a Virginia Rail, at one point almost together.
We noticed another birder who was violating all private property courtesy. Instead of birding from the driveway, he had walked down to the lakebed and was birding the far side along with his dog. Steve tried to get his attention and get him to come back up where we were legally birding, but the guy failed to respond. I left before the others and intended to put a note on his car, but he had returned to it and pulled out before I got there.
Since we did not recognize him, I doubt he was a local birder or will read this, but for the rest of the public who bird at Lake Jocelyn, I post this as reminder that we must respect the restrictions on birding at ANY private piece of property. We have been very lucky to have been able to access the Lake from the owner's driveway, but that permission does not extend to the property below.
I am not sure if this was the person we saw, but I see a birder's name in an eBird rare bird report for Lake Jocelyn from yesterday that was posted about the time we saw the intruder. If you know this person, please pass the message along.
