I think most of us know, respect and love Don and what he's done for the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refusge and the birds that nest or migrate through there. It's a pot luck, so folks are encouraged to bring something to eat and share. It's also an open mic concert that opens and closes the evening. Some of the music is sing-along and some isn't.
It'll be a great evening.

When the air or water are clean, thank an environmentalist. If not, become one. 'Nuff Said!

Jamaica Bay Estuary: An Urban Oasis for Wildlife & People. Our guest speaker tonight is Don Riepe. The Jamaica Bay estuary is home to many species of birds and other wildlife and is in Brooklyn and Queens. Managed by the National Park Service, the 13,000 acre preserve contains a variety of habitats such as saltmarsh and upland islands, old fields and open water. Don will discuss his past experience as refuge manager and current role as Jamaica Bay Guardian where he oversees a long-term raptor banding program for ospreys & barn owls, conducts annual butterfly, waterfowl and laughing gull census work, and interacts with the many agencies and user groups in the bay area. He will show many unique slides of birds, butterflies, reptiles, etc. in an urban setting and how the park manages for them.
Don Riepe was the NY Chapter Director for the American Littoral Society for 25 years and is now the “Jamaica Bay Guardian”. He recently retired from the National Park Service where he worked as a naturalist and manager of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in NYC . Don has written many articles on natural history subjects and his photographs have been published in many journals including Scientific American, National Wildlife, Audubon, Defenders, Underwater Naturalist, Parade and The New York Times. An avid birder, he also has a keen interest in Lepidoptera ( butterflies & moths).
