Hi Everyone,
My name is Jeff Fleischer and I am project developer / manager of the Winter Raptor Survey Project sponsored by the East Cascades Bird Alliance based in Bend, OR. We are about to enter our 22nd winter of survey work and I would like to let you know that I have a few vacant survey routes that I would like to fill. Volunteers in this project are asked to do one survey a month for the primary survey months of December through February. These surveys can be done on a day that fits with your monthly life schedule. November and March are also available for surveys but these are optional months for the project. We ask that you have sufficient optics to help you search for birds and that you have basic ID knowledge of the common species of raptors in these areas.
Following is a list of the routes that need a volunteer with their lengths in ():
Alturas North (61)
Alturas West (67)
Alturas-Likely (70)
Etna (83)
Ft. Jones (53)
Willow Creek-Red Rock Rd near Newell, CA (32)
The Alturas routes are especially lucrative for birds and are a high priority to fill. The Etna and Ft. Jones routes have yet to be surveyed.
If you are interested in participating in this project and taking one or more of these routes, I would welcome your help!:). Last winter, we ended the survey season with 614 active routes (spread throughout all of OR, WA, and ID, across the northern tier of CA and UT, throughout the western portion of MT, and in the southern part of BC Canada) covering more than 35,000 miles of transects each month and surveyed by more than 500 primary volunteers, you would be joining a very large and active project! :). If you are interested, please email me directly as soon as you can with your first and second choice of routes, I will fill these on a first come first served basis.
