This morning felt like a summer morning compared to yesterday's frosty beginning as we continue banding at this historic property groomed for wildlife. Had a feeling we would have a big day given overcast skies, mild conditions, and no wind - given that feeling, only opened 8 nets. The 1st net checked after having finishing opening the 8 nets instantly had 9 captures - the other nets had another 6 birds - at this point, we knew that the morning was going to be non-stop ageing, sexing & banding captures. After only 3 net checks for the morning, we had processed 47 captures [our highest total this year to this point] when the sun & heat shut us down. The majority of captures were Wht-thr Sparrows [17] followed by Goldfinches - other captures was 1 Ruby-cr Kinglet, Song Sparrows, Cardinals, Tufted Titmouse, Chickadees, E Phoebe, House Finch, Y-rumped Warbler, Carolina Wren, CatbirdOther birds of interest were several Rusty Blackbirds singing over our nets, Towhees, Hermit Thrush, Cooper's Hawk, Ravens, many Bluebirds, sapsucker & other woodpeckers - as we walked towards the 1st net to close, approx 40+ finches flush in front of us heading towards the net - fortunately they missed the net where last fall flocks like that didn't miss the nets.=C2=A0Given the upcoming weather, probably wouldn't band until next Wes when based on past history, 47 captures would be a quiet day.
