Observation start time: 07:30:00 Observation end time: 16:30:00 Total observation time: 9 hours
Official Counter: Craig Jackson
Observers: Ben Shamgochian
Visitors: Maddie Collins and her friend came with their binoculars
Weather: Strong to moderate NW winds throughout the day with the strongest winds in early morning before 10 AM with a maximum gust of 25 km/hr. At 10 AM decreased slightly and for the rest of the day the maximum gust was 18 km/hr. Temperature went from 6-11-10°C. Cloud cover began with about 7% on the SE horizon and changed to 0% at the end of the day with minimal clouds moving in from the north while the clouds to the south moved out
Raptor Observations: Given the strong NW winds and good start to the day (5 birds in the first hour) although it was a good movement of raptors, I had hoped for more. Highlight of the day was a Merlin that powered past at 3:30 PM Non-migrating -- 1-2 Turkey Vultures; 1 adult Bald Eagle; 1 Osprey; at least 1 Cooper's Hawk, and at least 4 and possibly 6 Red-tailed Hawks. The Red-tailed Hawks were several times observed in "dog fights" and at least one had reciprocal "dog fights" with a Raven
Non-raptor Observations: Birds - 65 Canada Geese ( 2 skeins - 35 and 30); 1 Eastern Phoebe; and 1 Raven Dragonflies -- One Green Darner was seen
Predictions: The forecast for Friday morning is moderate NNW winds in the morning turning southerly in the afternoon. Saturday SSW winds in the morning are predicted to become easterly in the afternoon, and Sunday ENE winds are predicted to strengthen and bring rain in the afternoon. Friday (especially morning) looks like the best weather for hawk migration. Unfortunately, I have a doctor's appointment in the morning, and since it is an eye exam, even if I could get to the Rock in the afternoon I may have to wear dark glasses. So if anyone can cover the Rock on Friday, I would greatly appreciate it ======================================================================== Report submitted by Craig Jackson (<crleja1949...>)
