Subject: [cobirds] Chukar id help, Larimer county
I was in Hewlett Gulch at about 6000 elevation. The gulch has a some trees,
mix of deciduous and conifers. The hillsides are quite barren and rocky. 2
birds, grouse sized, flushed from a conifer and flew up the steep hillside.
I tried to refind them and got a couple short calls that were unfamiliar.
eBird sound id said Chukar. I think it was too low elevation and not enough
spruce for grouse. The eBird sounds for grouse calls were not what I heard.
I never imagined Chukars in the foothills but I see some checklists with
them there.
Thoughts?
