Subject: Warriors Path State Park
I am working on my goal of visiting all Pennsylvania State Parks so I headed to Warriors Path State Park this morning. It is a small state park in Bedford county just outside of Saxton on the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. The 349-acre Warriors Path State Park lies very near the famous path used by the Iroquois in raids and wars with the Cherokees and other American Indians in southern Pennsylvania. There are grassy paths and several trails with one along the river. One trail goes through an area that was once a farm and a photo shows an old part of a mower. Another photo shows what my map calls Abbott Ridge along the river.
I felt lucky to scare up a Ruffed Grouse, a rare event. The dying Beech trees helped produce all woodpeckers except Red-headed and Sapsucker with many Red-bellied. A late Eastern Phoebe called from a building in the picnic area. I heard Canada Geese in the river and also an Osprey.
Carolina Wrens were numerous as well as a flock of Cedar Waxwings and American Robins. There were singing White-throated Sparrows as well as a Swainson’s Thrush high-pitched peep.
I was hoping for migrating warblers but only had Yellow-rumped.
BTW one of the parks I need is Allegheny Islands, NW of Pittsburgh. I need advice on finding a boat ride over to it.
