Subject: [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC - Sat., Oct. 4th - E. Whip-poor-will, Red-headed WP, Y-br. Chat, Clay-colored Sparrow, etc.
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - Saturday, October 4th -

An Eastern Whip-poor-will was first noticed perched before sunrise around the Ramble area of the park, later seen by more observers and photographers. There have also been late-ish Common Nighthawks moving, but not found perched lately as far as is known at this point.

A first-fall plumaged Red-headed Woodpecker -lacking any red on its head- was seen again, now present for the better part of a week in the same areas of the park and actively caching acorns, a sign that this individual could be considering a longer-term stay into winter.

A Yellow-breasted Chat was seen at the Delacorte Theater and Shakespeare Garden and vicinity of Central Park, also another sighting from quite early on Saturday, that thanks to one of our vagrant-tanager specialists, with some other observers of the Chat later on, as well, and the Chat possibly moving into the Ramble in later hours.

A Clay-colored Sparrow was lingering in the area of just-west of Fifth Ave, north of the parks E. 72 St. entrance, to Saturday, 10-4.

A bit more on the prior sightings of Clay-colored Sparrow at Central Park, from Sept. 27, days ahead of the later Oct. 3rd find of that species - or perhaps of that individual - the 9-27 sighting in part by F. Marcisak and L. Beausoleil, at Falconers Hill, not very far west from the Pilgrim Hill site of the Oct. 3 Clay-colored. It might be added that with far more Clay-coloreds starting to breed successfully in eastern NY state and in New England states as well as in eastern Canada the species has been getting less-rare than it once was in our entire region, including these birds showing up outside the breeding season in N.Y. City and all surrounding counties from time to time.

Thanks to observers and photographers including those who lead walks for and participate with not-for-profit conservation and science-based organizations and institutions as well as many independent birders, all using non-x bird-alert apps with as-always, eBird, and the Macaulay Library for media archiving.

Good birding,
