Date: 10/6/25 7:31 am From: Tom Fiore <tomfi2...> Subject: [nysbirds-l] Manhattan, NYC - to Oct. 6th - V. Rail, Y.-br. Chat, 18+ warbler spp. on 10/5 at Central Park, etc.
Manhattan, N.Y. City - to Monday, October 6th -
A Virginia Rail as well as a lingering Yellow-breasted Chat were both found and photographed in number Three Bryant Park, a plaza adjacent to the actual midtown Bryant Park, early on Monday, 10-6, with multiple observers. This narrow plaza is a short way west of Sixth Avenue and joins W. 42 and W. 41 Streets just west of Bryant Park.
A minimum of 18 species of migratory American-hemisphere warblers were found on Sunday, October 5th at Central Park - many of these species also were occurring in other locations all across Manhattan.
Orange-crowned Warblers have been found over many days by now in multiple locations in New York County, including at Central Park. Thanks again to the many observers and photographers who have reported these and 150+ additional native and wild birds this month so far, in Manhattan and the other several islands of New York County, all using non-x bird-alert apps and the vast majority also using eBird with the Macaulay Library for media in both visual and auditory formats.
A White-eyed Vireo in the Central Park Ramble is a lingering individual, seen, eBirded and photo-documented on prior days and thru this past weekend. Also present at Central Park on Sunday were late-now Warbling, plus Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, and to Saturday, Oct. 4, a Yellow-throated Vireo which was running a bit late in the season for this area.
A Fox Sparrow, presumed of the usual for our region Red Fox Sparrow form, was seen at Inwood Hill Park on Sunday, a somewhat early date for this species in this area, although not unprecedented. A rather typical peak arrival period in fall for these is around the start of November, but many can be found in the month of October in most years here, usually later on in the month.
Bobolinks, regular in fall in this county and around Manhattan, have been showing at times for many weeks by now, one recent individual at Central Park was photographed for the Macaulay Library via eBird, on Saturday, 10-5.
Ongoing at the Central Park reservoir is Pied-billed Grebe, and multiple Wood Ducks and Green-winged Teal are among waterfowl that is ongoing as well in Central Park.
Thanks to the leaders for and participants in guided not-for-profit bird walks which are continuing on this month in Manhattan as well as other locations city-wide, and also to hundreds of independent observers and photographers all using both non-x bird-alert apps and eBird for confirmations of a wide variety of migrants and other birds.
Good birding,
Tom Fiore
