Tuesday About 1 pm, sun shining, a bright black and yellow-tailed form buzzed me near my front door, dashing in & then out of my shaded porch. First thought was Western swallowtail? No-- black too bold. but it disappeared into the Catalina Cherry (Prunus) hedge.
One hour later, a small warbler sized bird appeared alone at the grd drip saucer to bathe, later preening in the open branches of the Prunus hedge.
Markings: grayish head, chest and throat without flecks, bright yellow at shoulders, whitish undersides, olive-gray back, and dark tail except for bright yellow at the base of primaries which showed both from above and in-flight. Black eyes. White eye ring and a hint of white @supraloral. Not traveling with the regular group of smalls that makes the rounds 2-3x daily. Assuming feeding on Prunus fruit skins & insects.
Since Tues. have seen it everyday in the Prunus and/or the grd drip bath. Moves very fast, often cocking and fanning that bright yellow & black tail.
F Summer Tanager continues feeding on Prunus fruit skins. Barn Owl appeared at 6 am in the nest box this morning for 1st time in 10 yrs.
