A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was repeatedly singing the full Western Meadowlark in a recently harvested corn field along Crawford Road in Kibler bottoms this morning. Based upon my previous records, this bird is about “on time” in terms of Fall arrival. EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were also singing.
Noting this date has been important to me in trying to keep decently accurate records of the two meadowlark species in northwestern Arkansas in winter. During nesting season, of course, only Eastern (though we have had a few Westerns). During winter, in some places, flocks of meadowlarks may be Westerns – identified by call, often the “churt” calls.
