Broad-winged Hawk season is mostly over. The birds are heading for South America for the winter. This season was above average with over 1900 of the little buteos counted. Thanks to everyone who spotted those high birds in the clouds. My neck still hurts from looking straight up.

Early October is among my favorite times at Franklin Mountain. It is the period of greatest species diversity. Leaf color peaks and it isn't very cold. Birds will be migrating, including those that use powered flight – falcons and accipiters. Gross numbers aren't usually high but on a good day you can sometimes see 10 species. An early Octoberday with ideal wind conditions (moderate NW winds) is a real treat. I will send out an alert when I see those ideal conditions in the forecast. Later in October we should see an increase in Red-tailed Hawks andthe first Golden Eagles. The long-range forecast shows temperatures dropping around the first October. That's good.

Mark your calendar: The annualFranklin Mountain Open House will be held on Saturday, October 4.There will be refreshments, a workshop on identifying flying raptors,a trail walk, and live rehabilitated birds in the afternoon. We hopeto see you there. Details and directions are athttps://doas.us/events/sanctuary-open-house/.

Before traveling to Franklin Mountain, always check the weather forecast. Today (Thursday) was rained out. Tomorrow (Friday) through this coming weekend looks mostly dry, with good wind direction tomorrow.
