Date: 9/26/25 4:49 pm From: Stan Walens via groups.io <stan.walens...> Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Belated frigatebird report; misc. information
1. On Tuesday Sep 23 I was near Cliffridge Park in La Jolla when a frigatebird briefly appeared over La Jolla Mesa at about 3:25pm, sailing east as one of a series of strong fronts came through.
The bird was too high up to see details and I didn’t have binoculars, but it appeared entirely black. No possibility of i.d. as to species.
It circled up and then streamed south towards Mt. Soledad/Bird Rock.
2. I-5 North between Mission Valley and Rte 52 will be closed this weekend, from 9:00 tonight until 5:00 a.m. Monday.
3. If you hadn’t heard, local birder and photographer Barbara Swanson was one of the main prizewinners of this year’s Audubon photography awards. Her stunning photograph of a Brandt’s cormorant can best be seen at the Audubon website: https://www.audubon.org/magazine/2025-audubon-photography-awards-winners.
4. Palomar Audubon is having a field trip to the Cove tomorrow, Sep. 27. Interlopers are always welcome. 8:00am at my bench. If you are going to join us and are coming from the south, see note #2.
