Weather: Sunny and partly cloudy all day. Light fog/haze remained on the north side of the lookout until the 10-11 hour. There was also a very brief sun drizzle of rain during the 9-10 hour. Wind remained steady around 5-6mph from the northwest throughout the day, with slight increased gusts.
Raptor Observations: Local raptors: TUVU 18, BLVU 4, Second-year BAEA observed twice throughout the day, 2 AD RTHA, as well as 2 juveniles
Migrating raptor flight began in the first hour and remained fairly consistent, with a slight lull in the 12-1 hour. Flight line was established more westerly in the first few hours, switching to SSW by the early afternoon. Some mixed altitude flight was observed, but most of the SSHAs were visible with the naked eye, coming from the north across Rt 183 and overhead. Some small groups of streaming BWHAs, some small kettles were observed as well. Later in the afternoon, a kettle of almost 50 broadwings was seen and they peeled into the southern slope of the lookout. In the last few minutes of the count, while watching several TUVUs, a bird came from the northwestern side of the lookout, and dove behind the right side of the slope. When it popped back up and was fully visible - it was a beautiful adult PEFA. This was a great last bird of the day. We observed the PEFA travel parallel to the lookout, thermal in the southern slope, and continue south. Overall a diverse and exciting day! Thanks to Dave Hughes and Perry Hoover for being at the lookout today!
