Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) (2) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 19, 2025 16:50 by marlin harms
- Tidelands Park, San Luis Obispo, California

- Comments: "When I first arrived I saw 2 Yellow-crowned Night-heron juveniles perched on the fishing boat Rose Lynn, which was docked near the large parking lot. As I started to walk, one of them, then the other flew down from the boat to dock, then across the small amount of water to the rocky shore of boulders just down from the parking lot and below the sidewalk where I was. As I concentrated on one, I lost track of the other. The one I watched did some patient standing, then some side-to-side swaying of head, neck and sometimes body as it seemed to home in on its prey. I tried to get some video (links below) and witnessed the night-heron gradually stretch its neck forward and dart its bill at prey at the edges of these large rocks several times. It caught something quite small that I could not identify; missed on another attempt; caught, but then immediately lost a crab with large pinchers; then finally was successful at catching another crab. The heron briefly tried to orient the crab such that it could get it down its bill without removing any appendages and, while still holding the crab in its bill, flew to the nearest part of the dock where it continued trying to align the crab in its bill. After most of a minute it successfully swallowed the crab. Videos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/marlinharms/54811476588/
