Dear Birders,
Today was an avian mass mortality event at windows on the campuses of the University of Cincinnati (UC) and surrounding areas and structures such as the EPA facility.
While we get dead birds daily at UC and have had over 100 killed already this fall, today was beyond depressing. Dead birds down everywhere and dying and injured birds everywhere; birds with crushed beaks, skulls, bleeding from the mouth, etc. My field crew and I collected over 70 birds. My guess is likely more than 1,000 perished today in uptown Cincinnati alone.
Please realize this problem is way worse than most imagine! We kill over 2 billion annually in NA by windows, build non-stop in the USA adding more and more huge glass buildings daily, with no limits on development and construction, etc. There are hundreds of millions glass buildings killing birds. Thus, we are going to eventually have a true "silent spring" and are skies will be empty! The urgency is now!
Something needs to be done other than mostly "talk" (more action needed)! My field crew and I had already collected about 40 Ovenbirds this fall and got nearly 25 today! I am begging birds to please consider the extreme urgency of this environmental problem.
Species collected today include (no particular order, I'm tired): Mourning Dove, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Bay-breasted Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Swainson's, Gray-cheeked and Wood thrushes, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
I'm way behind on the Cardinal journal, need to be doing that instead of picking up dead birds daily; so, I always welcome more help. Funding, lobbying, letters, sign our petition, etc. always needed. To sign our petition, please email my former student Ash Conway at <ashleynicoleconway...>
Please feel free to email me off list at <ron.canterbury...> but it may be a while before I can get time to reply.
