Date: 9/22/25 4:13 pm From: Mietron Shahbodaghloo <m.shahbodaghloo...> Subject: [cobirds] Grand Valley Audubon Banding Station - Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (09/22/25) – Mesa Co.
Sparrow season is upon us and the white-crowns have started to make their
way here in the numbers. We have had a few adults of both the oriantha and
gambels ssp., but today we got our first hatch year Gambel’s. We also got
our first Clay-colored Sparrow and a surprise visit from an adult male
Cooper’s Hawk. We found him in the net thankfully with no other passerines
nearby or in the net. We’ll see if these storms along the Rockies will
bring any new migrants our way.
*7 Newly Banded Birds:*
Bewick’s Wren: 1
Clay-colored Sparrow: 1
Cooper’s Hawk: 1
Gambel’s White-crowned Sparrow: 3
Spotted Towhee: 1
*2 Recaptured Birds:*
Black-capped Chickadee: 2
The station will operate daily (Monday-Friday) from around 7:00a-1:00p
(weather dependent) until October 10th.
We’re located at James M Robb Colorado River State Park by the Kingfisher
parking lot. Follow the yellow signs pointing to the banding station! Feel
free to stop by when we’re around! Or join us on our Public Day on Sept 27th
