Subject: Red Crossbills, Green River Game Lands, Polk County, NC
Roger Smith, Brad Dalton, Annie Dalton and I enjoyed a small flock of Red
Crossbills this morning in the Green River Cove in Polk County, NC.

Brad first heard them when we were birding an oldfield area along the river
(with Canada Warbler, etc), then we ducked into the forest and saw and kept
hearing the birds in three adjacent and remarkably healthy Hemlock trees.
Then when they flew across the Green River, we heard their flight calls and
noted their large finchlike structure.

The location was along the Green River, behind the Green River Game Lands
handicapped hunting field - which is about two miles downstream of the
parking area of the Walcott Tract. There are some handicapped parking
signs beside Green River Cove Road and beyond that are some fields and a
strip of forest between the fields and the river.
