They were perched near each other on a small dead branch near my porch, giving excellent views. Came to my hummingbird feeder, and worked my front flower bed with petunias and a variety of other favored flowers. To me, they appeared to be Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Who knows. Not seen this morning. I always leave feeders up into November and hope for something else.

All our local hummingbirds should have departed for the winter. But a few from further north might stop by to refuel. My latest one in my yard was on October 28th a few years ago. And the excitement starts if a later migrating western species shows up unexpectedly. This could happen well into November - as has been the case with a Costa’s Hummingbird near Binghamton around Thanksgiving and Calliope Hummingbird downstate in December, and other examples. And, all Ruby-throats should not show any discernible size difference. Might you have something different?

Hummers are mostly gone from our area now. I had one at my feeders (Guilderland/New Scotland) on Wednesday, one on Thursday, then none until two this evening. One of those last two had a long drink then headed off due south.
