Observation start time: 05:30:00 Observation end time: 16:00:00 Total observation time: 10.5 hours
Official Counter: John Weeks
Observers: Gary Adamson, John Weeks, Steve Tysz
Visitors: John Marion; David, Peggy and Katie Doe; Katie spotted the Sapsucker and one Broad-wing.
Weather: Ample sunshine; cloud-cover usually 10% or less, never higher than 40%. At times there were more jet contrails than clouds. Interfering haze all day. Wind NE, becoming E during the last two hours, 3-9 mph. Temperature 59-70 F.
Raptor Observations: Another disappointing day â until just before 4 PM EDT, when a stream of Broad-wings numbering at least 240 birds passed high to the NW of the Hill. The tally is unquestionably an undercount, since the distance, the lack of clouds and the haze made the birds extremely difficult to see. Not counted as migrants: Turkey Vulture, 2 Bald Eagles (adult and sub-adult), Cooper's Hawk, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, 2 Red-tailed Hawks (ad. and immature). A noteworthy sight early on (at 9:25 EDT) was that of a Broad-winged Hawk wearing a telemetry pack on its back.
Non-raptor Observations: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue Jays (ca. 166, migrating), American Crows (4), Common Raven, Black-capped Chickadees (2), Tufted Titmouse, House Wren. Warblers: Black-and-white (f.), Common Yellowthroat (m.), Cape May (first-fall f.) Northern Parulas (2), Blackpolls (2), Yellow-rumped (4). Monarchs: 5.
Predictions: Poor wind direction; no watch planned. ======================================================================== Report submitted by John Weeks (<aerie.john...>)
