Captain Sargent Conservation Land, Middlesex, Massachusetts, US Sep 20, 2025 7:43 AM - 10:18 AM Protocol: Traveling 2.1 mile(s) Checklist Comments: 48-61F. Sunny and calm. Included a short walk onto abutting Shepherd Property to the second board walk and back to Capt. Sargent. (Recently stewarded property with a new loop walk including board walks and viewpoints.) Some excellent sightings on the water. Otherwise somewhat quiet until towards the end with higher sun and warmer temps. There were some birds seen at a distance at the meadow that could not be identified. 26 species (+1 other taxa)
Wood Duck 1 Mallard 4 American Black Duck 3 Mourning Dove 1 Solitary Sandpiper 2 Excellent sighting as they landed on a veg clump in the pond with good views. Double-crested Cormorant 2 Great Blue Heron 2 Osprey 1 hawk sp. 1 Brief sighting on the 2nd boardwalk of Shepperd Property as it flew through woods and landed mostly out of view (one shoulder). A few of us could only see it briefly from the back. Could not i.d. given light conditions. Possibly a Red-tailed immature as trail seemed brown or a barred owl (NOT a hawk species). Belted Kingfisher 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 5 Downy Woodpecker 3 Eastern Phoebe 2 Blue Jay 7 Black-capped Chickadee 5 Probably conservative count as based on estimate of those heard in different areas. Tufted Titmouse 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 5 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Brown Creeper 1 Winter Wren 1 Gray Catbird 1 Saw one near meadow but most likely more. Could not i.d. all the bird movement in some of the shrubs/bushes. Eastern Bluebird 6 House Finch 4 American Goldfinch 3 Chipping Sparrow 3 Common Yellowthroat 1 Pine Warbler 2 Heard each from canopy of different areas.
