Subject: Marion county Painted Bunting
I finally got my Marion County lifer Painted Bunting. It was a drab first year female. There was a nice group of various migrants in a draw that is wet, filled with weeds, and Rough leafed Dogwood. Birds have been spooky and skulking lately. I saw several female warblers that were challenging to identify, so I just said I couldn’t. Still multiple female Orioles around, but they are decreasing in numbers. Peak orioles were several weeks ago with 30 or 40 in the yard at one time. This has been the year for lots of juvenile Red-headed Woodpeckers. Today, I still saw 6 or 8 around the farm. Mid-September is often challenging to find birds around the farm, but today was a good day!
