It was a beautiful morning on Saturday, when six people showed up to our bird walk. Of these, three were children, and one had recently decided to start joining birdwalks (shout out to Mr. Ed Fitzgerald!). Since this was a walk with children in mind, the pace was relaxed and the duration limited to one hour.
We enjoyed the pleasant weather, several resident birds, and a few migrants. A group of unafraid American Goldfinches allowed us for very close observation, as they enjoyed the seed heads in the butterfly garden, we speculated that one of them might have been a juvenile as the head feathers looked extra fluffy. A Downy Woodpecker working a cup plant was a good reminder to us all that it is best to leave the garden be until the next spring, as a Northern Cardinal sang from the trees behind us.
We saw a Common Yellowthroat foraging in the goldenrods and a Hooded Warbler using the treetops as a highway on its way south. We also heard the call of a White Throated Sparrow, much to our delight.
PS: If anybody knows the email address of Mr. Fitzgerald, please forward this to him. I would also like to share the eBird list with him, and my file glitched before I could do so.
