Hello,
Yesterday AM I checked out a newly harvested and manured corn field and had 4 American Kestrels perched on the stubble hunting insects, I assume. A bit later at Gate 33 found a Merlin perched at the top of a Dead tree. A blue jay would occasionally fly under the Merlin and the Merlin would dive down after it, they would jostle for a bit and the jay would fly away. The jay did this 3 or 4 times. Seems an odd and, not to mention risky hobby for the Jay. Later in the day we hiked from the house to the shore of Quabbin Reservoir and we scoped a Peregrine Falcon on one of the sandy islands. Standing at the point of the same island there were 8 Double-crested Cormorants minding their own business and at one point the peregrine flew to them harassed them so they jumped into the water and the falcon flew back to where it was. The cormorants immediately got back on the same spot and continued hanging out. Eventually the peregrine flew off away from us. We weren’t sure what the peregrine was up to.
