For Friday, September 19th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware Museum of Natural History in Greenville. New this week was a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD visiting a yard in north Wilmington off Shipley Road. Unfortunately, this was a one-day wonder but there's lots of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS coming to feeders right now. If you see an unusual hummer, please contact the Birdline.
Migration is underway with almost 3 million migrants last night and the forecast is for a big flight tonight on Bird Cast. Several CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were reported this week from First State National Historical Park-Brandywine Unit off Ramsey Road, Ashland Nature Center, Middle Run Natural Area near Newark, Bay Point at Summit Bridge, and at the Fire Truck Pond Woods in the Port Penn Impoundments in Augustine Wildlife Area. A BREWSTER’S WARBLER (the hybrid of BLUE-WINGED and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER) was seen two days at Bay Pointe. TENNESSEE WARBLER was reported at Gray Acres in Newark, Bay Pointe, and Cape Henlopen State Park. NASHVILLE WARBLER was reported at Ashland Nature Center, Cape Henlopen, and Fresh Pond State Park near Bethany Beach. WILSON’S WARBLER was found downstate at the Dike Trail in Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, James Farm Eco-Preserve near Bethany, and Redden State Forest. The only CANADA WARBLER report was from Ashland, and the only HOODED WAR! BLER was at Gordon’s Pond near Rehoboth Beach. There was numerous PALM WARBLERS reported this week, along with a few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. Warblers commonly seen included, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK AND WHITE, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, YELLOW, CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED, BLACKBURNIAN, PRAIRIE, plus BLACK-THROATED BLUE and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was reported at Middle Run. YELLOW-THROATED and BLUE-HEADED VIREO was found at First State. A LEAST FLYCATCHER was seen near Weldin Road in Brandywine Hundred. OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHER was reported at Oversee Farm near Yorklyn. Birds reported at Ashland included LINCOLN’S SPARROW near the hawk watch, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, plus late occurring PURPLE MARTIN and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW along with an early arriving RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
An ALDER FLYCATCHER was photographed at Bay Pointe near Summit Bridge along with SUMMER TANAGER. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was identified at the Warren Tract in Augustine Wildlife Area. CLIFF SWALLOW and SORA were reported at Thousand Acre Marsh. BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK was found in a pond behind a house near Middletown. Some other commonly occurring migrants this week included VEERY, SWAINSON’S THRUSH, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and in the evening, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.
Shorebirds at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge near Smyrna included both MARBLED and HUDSONIAN GODWIT, AMERICAN AVOCET, DUNLIN, LONG-BILLED and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, WISON’S SNIPE, plus WHITE-RUMPED, PECTORAL, WESTERN and STILT SANDPIPER, along with CASPIAN TERN. Waders found included SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, SANDHILL CRANE, AMERICAN BITTERN, LITTLE BLUE, YELLOW-CROWNED AND BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, plus WHITE and GLOSSY IBIS. At least 10 PEREGRINE FALCONS and a MERLIN were seen hunting shorebirds over the impoundments. Landbird highlights included RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and COMMON RAVEN.
Another BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK was seen in Dover near Silver Lake. UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen flying over Dover Air Forse Base from the Air Transit Museum. LEAST TERN, COMMON GALLINULE, AMERICAN COOT, PIED-BILLED GREBE and TRICOLORED HERON were seen at Little Creek Wildlife Area.
RED KNOT was found at Broadkill Beach marsh in Prime Hook. AMERICAN GOLDEN and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, WILLET plus BLACK SKIMMER and CASPIAN TERN were seen along the Dike Trail at Prime Hook headquarters. A late SUMMER TANAGER and an early YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were seen along the woods near headquarters. Yellow-Throated Warbler and WHITE IBIS were seen at Oyster Tocks Road.
The storm on Wednesday produced 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at Cape Henlopen Point. There was also a flight of 30 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS. DICKCISSEL was seen Sunday and today. YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, RED-BREASTED, and BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH were seen at the Seaside Nature Center. BLACK SCOTER, COMMON LOON and BROWN PELICAN were seen offshore along with flocks of WHITE and GLOSSY IBIS. There were 3 YELLOW-CROWNED and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON at the Monroe Ave Pond. RUDDY TURNSTONE and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER were seen at Indian River inlet along with COMMON, CASPIAN, and ROYAL TERN. LITTLE BLUE HERON and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON were seen at Burton’s Island in Delaware Seashore State Park
WORM-EATING WARBLER, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and WARBLING VIREO were seen at Redden State Forest. RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was also seen at Love Creek near Lewes. A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was reported at Harbison.
Delaware’s two hawkwatches had a great flight today! Ashland Nature Center reported almost 3500 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, plus 23 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 10 BALD EAGLES. Cape Henlopen reported 325 SHARP-SHINNED and 51 COOPER’S HAWKS plus 278 OSPREY, 43 KESTRELS, 24 MERELIN and 2 PEREGRINEs. Come on out tomorrow, it might be even a bigger flight!
