Subject: [CT Birds] Mohawk Mountain Hawk Watch, 15 Sept 2025
Hello,

Beth and I recently visited the "Mohawk Mountain Hawk Watch" in
Litchfield Co. We gave it a quick reconnoiter a few days ago and returned
yesterday to give it a proper look. Over 2.25 hr, we recorded the following:

Turkey Vulture 4
Osprey 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Cooper's Hawk 2
Sharp-shinned/Cooper's Hawk 2 (distant)
Bald Eagle 2
Broad-winged Hawk 25
Red-shouldered Hawk 3
American Kestrel 1
Peregrine Falcon 1
hawk sp.4 (super distant)

Not amazing, but I think the site holds some promise on a day with a little
more wind. Yesterday, it was light and variable, but mostly NE, so birds
were moving with strong directionality to the S.

Does anyone know anything about the history of this site? Someone obviously
thought it could be a "hawk watch" site at some point and named the eBird
hotspot accordingly, but it has received no consistent attention that I am
aware of. Ebird lists only 25 checklists (4 of them ours) since 1991. Very
few of these are from the fall hawk watch season, although a few folks also
observed a smattering of migrating hawks in spring. There seems to be no
data for the site on hawkcount.org. It's the sort of place that could be
good in fall. A road goes right to the top of the cleared summit at 1680
feet with superb views in all directions, but especially to the north.
While a couple of the birds passed us to the west and rather distant,
nearly all the birds passed right over us. The wind over the next few days
doesn't look like it will be especially good for hawks, but we'll
definitely be back for another look when conditions indicate.

Best to all, George
