Results banding from Sat 9/13 and today Mon 9/16 were quite busy each morning despite the bright sunny warm days - key was getting the nets up early before the sun lit them up!Both mornings we had captured about 18 birds on the 1st run and another 8 and the 2nd run - by the time we finished processing all the birds esp from the 1st run, we closed the nets after taking the birds out on the 2nd run feeling the heat. No 3rd run again despite plenty of birds around - by the time we finished up the banding and closing the nets, it was around noon each day. What did we catch - at least 10 Pine Warblers [everywhere], several Phoebes & Chipping Sparrows & Downy Wood & Goldfinches & Towhees, 3 Flickers [so stunning], few Song Sp, 1 Am Redstart, 1 Lincoln Sp, few House & Carolina Wrens, surprisingly only several Catbirds, 2 Ovenbirds, 5 Chickadees, 2 Field Sp, 2 Rose-b Grosbeaks, 3 CardinalsThe challenge [outside of extracting Chickadees] is focusing while walking to the nets is not to be distracted trying to ID all the birds flying up in front & around you - no time knowing you probably have several birds in the next net ahead of you to extract - interesting problem - many sparrows, Pine Warblers, Phoebes, few vireos in the paths/trees - nice mixture of raptors enjoying the food like Cooper's & Sharp-shinned, Broad-wings & Red-shouldered. For those interested, Drumlin Farm has a trip on Sat. 9/27 coming to West Hill Dam in Uxbridge to observe the banding, then hit a few other birding locations close by after we close the nets.Click on this: Bird Banding at Westhill Dam Strickland Wheelock Uxbridge MA
