- Comments: "34.4217658, -119.6581641 I got lucky when I arrived in the parking lot very close to these GPS coordinates. Wim Van Dam took a few minutes of his personal time to make sure I see the bird. First, the bird was purchasing around one foot off the ground in the Reeds on one side of this muddy beach stretch, then it flew over us and landed on the other set of reeds. If you stand at that spot where the GPS coordinates would put you look either to your left or to your right until you see a grayish green flycatcher with a large bill that is pale underneath and dark above. Subjectively this bird feels greener than a willow flycatcher. The tertials are bright and very well defined. The head is round. Wim took photos of the bird while I was standing next to him. I have added a photo taken through my binoculars with my cell phone to document that I saw the bird. It is at the left edge of the photo."

- Comments: "Continuing. Found yesterday by Mark Holmgren. Seen and photographed by many others and much debate ensued about which flycatcher it is. This morning had wonderful views in great light, allowing decent photos even with my modest camera. It hung low in the tall grasses edging the mudflat next to the parking lot. Primarily stayed on the western side. Thin eyering, orange lower mandible, two bright cream wingbars, olive-brown upperparts, short bill, white throat. No vocalization. Very active and twitchy bird. Thanks to Wim Van Dam for getting me on the bird initially. Then it was a bit of a show off for the rest of the hour I stayed."

- Comments: "PAG: Excellent viewing conditions on the east side of the exposed mud area along Los Patos Way out from the parking lot. The bird was perched and observed foraging out from tules for an extended period, staying mostly 6-inches to 4-feet off the ground. Olive head and back, with lower back/rump appearing gray in some lighting conditions. Wings blackish with high contrast between white tertial and secondary edges and pale wing bars. Throat white wrapping around sides of neck. Darker gray wash across upper breast, pale below. The tail appeared square and relatively short. Bill moderately sized, yellow below. Thin white eyering, pale loral area. No vocalizations heard. Photos.
RAH: The bird appeared more compact - shorter tailed and shorter billed, not at all lanky - than I think of for WIFL. Tawny upper and creamy lower wing-bars and tertial edges were more pronounced than I have seen on a WIFL. The white throat was set off by a broad, dusky band across the breast."

Length of P6-7 appeared slightly longer than length of P5-6, which is supposedly good for ALFL over eastern WIFL. Unfortunately silent. Flycatching in the reeds on the south side of the shoreline. The bird was sallying out from the reeds to feed on flies swarming on the surface of the lagoon shore."

- Comments: "Small flycatcher chiefly hawking from the reed/mud interface along the NE corner of the Refuge water/mudhole, but sometimes resting briefly on the mud with sparrows. During the 2 hr I was present, the bird was west of the mud "beach" for 20-30 min, flew over and east of the beach for an unknown time period where it was hunted but not seen, and then was refound west of the beach about 20 min before sunset. In the terminology of Lee & Birch (2023), the bird has a "flattish" to "round" head, probable "medium" forehead angle, probable "medium" bill length, definite yellow lower mandible, probable "medium" tail length, probable "medium" tail width, "medium" primary/tertial ratio, definite "medium" wingbar contrast, probable "strong" wing-panel contrast, "strong" upper/underpart contrast, a clearly thin and crisp eye-ring, and brown overall color. I observed some tail pumping/flicking, but this could have been simply the bird maintaining balance on an unstable reed perch. No vocalizations that I could detect, even with cranked-up hearing aids. Many of these features are compatible with Least Flycatcher and Alder Flycatcher, but the bill size, eye ring, and wingbar contrast are most compatible with Alder Flycatcher. (My pictures were taken nearly directly into the sun and, although unprocessed, should not be used to assess color of the bird.)"

- Comments: "ID based on developing consensus among experts. Seen with other birders on the edge of the reeds at the mud apron by the parking lot, mostly on the east side. The bird was often perched on a horizontal reed about 1-2 feet from the ground, sometimes sallying to catch insects. Relevant field marks include a round head with no crest showing (that I could see), rather small bill, greenish-olive above, dark wings with strong whitish wingbars. Some eBird photos (e.g. see Lynn Scarlett’s from 9/15) clearly indicate primary stacking positive for Alder (P6:P7 < 1, Birch and Lee 2025). No one’s yet reported any vocalization. Photos."

- Comments: "Found earlier in the morning by Mark Holmgren, this individual was the source of a lot of debate, based on photos, with Least Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, and Alder Flycatcher all offered as IDs, based on photos shared publicly before I arrived and while I was on the site. A half hour or so after I arrived, watching this bird come in and out of sight along the lake shore, I was joined by Eunice Schroeder, Lynn Scarlett, David and Linda Blue, Pam Viale, and Adrian O'Loghlen. My photos were much poorer than those taken by others. There was a lot of conversation about primary tip spacing shown on the different photos. But I'll focus on what I could see rather than what showed up in others photos, although I know the determination of the ID will rely on the photos. The bird was mostly perching in Schoenoplectus, near the mudflats rimming the shore, usually seen close to the ground, at 40 or 50 feet. The bird had a very narrow eye ring that in some binocular looks was not very evident. I couldn't see much of a pale blob in the lores. The head appeared pretty consistently dull grayish, with a very white contrasting throat. The mantle, nape, and rump were a dark olive, as seen in good light, but sometimes looked more gray. The wings were blackish and had boldly contrasting white wing bars and white edges to the tertials and secondaries. The bold pattern of the wing stood out very strongly, and was different from what I'm used to in western Willows. It was similar to what I would expect in Least, but at some angles the blackish cast to the wings looked less obvious, although the overall wing pattern was still striking because of how bold the wing bars and wing feather edgings were. The bird had a noticeably dusky wash across the breast that framed the white throat above and contrasted with the bright white belly and under tail coverts below. Sometimes I did see a yellowish cast to the belly. The under side of the tail was gray. The bird looked shorter tailed than Willow or Western and seemed to have slightly longer wings than western Willow or Western. The head was pretty flat on the crown and rounded at the back, lacking the slight peak I would expect in either Willow or Least. The bill was shorter than I believe it should be in Willow and longer than it should be in Least. Full disclosure is that, as this bird was initially reported as Least, I too easily leaned that way when I saw a bird that didn't look like any of the usual suspects--Western, Willow, Gray, Hammond's. I never thought this bird looked like a Willow, although some thought the early photos suggested the bird was that species."

Short to moderate primary extension; discreet white throat that wraps under auriculars. Bill small in some pic, larger in others; pale mandible, all dark maxilla. Thin eyering. Bold wing bars somewhat amber-colored. Broad dark olivy chest band not vested in some photos, slightly vested in others. Some streaking dripping below that dark band. Belly is yellowish-white. Back is brownish-green with little contrast between head and mantle. Thin white margin to outer rectrix. Tail flips up."

- Comments: "34.434607,-119.812551 large "female" warbler that resembles a McGillivray's Warbler, but with yellow from the breast penetrating up into the throat. Otherwise, most of the head looks gray. This bird moves around a lot and is very skulky, and I would not have seen it had it not been for the presence of many other local birders who helped me see it. It moves stealthily inside and along the entire length of hedgrows, occasionally popping up into the Tipu trees in the parking lot. Photographed by the gentleman in gray shorts and a green t-shirt while I was standing next to him. Eventually the bird reappeared at 34.434795,-119.811363 which I am told is its main spot that it faithfully returns to. When it returned to this area it always stayed inches above the ground while flying."

A group of six of us followed the bird as it moved along the hedge, barely seen from frequent movements as it made its way north toward Hollister Ave. I saw only quick glimpses of yellow and an occasional bird shape until it got very close to the end of the hedge, at the entrance. Then it came briefly into view, showing its head well enough that I could see a gray head, thin white eye arcs, and a yellow throat. If I had found this bird on my own, these looks would've been enough for me to think I had probably seen a Mourning Warbler. Given others saw the bird well, I have no doubt that's what it was."

Eventually it flew up into a Tipu tree where I had some marginally decent views and took some photos, only a couple of which turned out. Later it returned to the original location, for almost decent views and it began calling a bunch, and I was able to get some recordings. ID features seen include: long undertail coverts; grayish head contrasting with yellow throat; very thin, almost complete pale eye ring; longish bill with a slightly curved culmen, and a pale pinkish mandible; rectricies very pointed = HY. Calls heard a few times, different in indescribable ways from both Common Yellowthroat and MacGillivray’s Warblers."

At first, we had 3-4 brief and rather unsatisfactory looks at the bird moving from shrub to shrub in the parking lot but it eventually flew into one of the taller and less dense shrubs along the eastern edge of the property where we had better views. It landed on the ground in front of the shrub and we also watched it move through the vegetation. During the duration of the time spent with the bird, we heard it vocalize about 10-12 times, giving rather short and flat single note calls, noticeably different from that of a common yellowthroat or MacGillivray's warbler. Secretive and skulking. Warbler with solid olive back and tail. The head when viewed from behind showed contrasting gray but it didn't appear well defined. Yellow undersides with yellow visibly extending into the throat area."
