Observation start time: 09:00:00 Observation end time: 16:30:00 Total observation time: 7.5 hours
Official Counter: Rob Woodward
Observers:
Visitors: Just 15 on a warm sunny day but Mt Major didn't look very busy either.
Weather: Clear to start with increasing cloudiness from the north, but not enough cloud cover most of the day to provide a backdrop; light winds first from the NE eventually turning N/NE, then N and finally NW; warm, 57 - 77 F.
Raptor Observations: Apart from a single Osprey, Bald Eagle, and Cooper's Hawk, it was all Broad-winged and Sharp-shinned Hawks, most flying very high. A good solid count for this early date, only 36 this date last year. Kettles were on the boil we were not so easily called away. Two kettles in the teens during the 2 o'clock hour.
Non-raptor Observations: Local Red-tailed Hawks were kiting and always plenty of Turkey Vultures and ravens. A few warblers were on the move, a Scarlet Tanager, and a loon was heard. 8 Monarchs, 1 Yellow Sulphur, and a Praying Mantis. A Barred Owl was perched near the trail on my way down.
Predictions: Wind direction might be similar to today's but turning SW later in the day. If a few good kettles come through it will be a higher count than today. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Rob Woodward (<toucanrob...>)
