This morning at 10:15 AM, I saw an apparent first year / female type
Scarlet Tanager at the arboretum. Completely blackish-olive wings with no
wingbars. Brief but good look despite the poor photo. Seen in maples
immediately
S of Zellerbach garden between SE Asia path and Camelia Walk, above a
stream. 4-5 WETAs plus assorted warblers were bathing / hanging around
also. The apparent SCTA had been hanging around the uppermost water feature
at about (37.7681885, -122.4720159).
Absolutely the world’s worst photo:
A lot of WETAs were feeding on a bush with dangling magenta flowers & fruit
in the next clearing S of the previous spot (along the cloud forest path
below MLK drive). See photos below. This might be a good place to check.
Roughly at (37.7678514, -122.4721410). Best viewed from (correction) SE
Asia path.
We tried to find it for about 30 to 40 minutes, but then had to leave. It’s
very noisy & crowded now with piano performances throughout the arboretum.
Morning (7-10am) would probably be the best time to search.
