Observation start time: 08:00:00 Observation end time: 15:00:00 Total observation time: 6.5 hours
Official Counter: Chris Pugliese, Dave Eberly
Observers: Alan Simon, Bob Kelly, Dave Eberly, Sue Vanasse
Visitors: Dick Rainer and a gentlemen who wanted a photo of a hawk in his yard identified. It was a juvenile Red-tail
Weather: Clear skies gave way to a mostly cloudy afternoon with lots of puffy cumulus and patches of blue. Temperatures rose into the mid to upper 70s. Winds were generally NE with a few strong gusts in the afternoon.
Raptor Observations: Eight Broadwings in the morning with just one in the afternoon. Sharpies and Kestrels made a decent showing.
We counted one Merlin as a migrant but had 3 or 4 sightings of what appeared to be a different individual hanging around in the park.
Other non-migrating raptors: BV, TV, a pair of Red-tails and one distant unaged Bald Eagle
Non-raptor Observations: Lots of Chimney swifts and Tree Swallows. One "kettle" of 35 American Crows was observed.
A Double-crested Cormorant was observed flying toward the reservoir at treetop level.
Dragonflies rated "fairly abundant"
Predictions: Continued NE winds with gusts in the 20s thanks to strong low pressure on the Virginia coast. Increasing clouds with a slight chance of light rain which will increase through the day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by David Eberly (<david.eberly...>) Rose Tree Park information may be found at: www.rtphawkwatch.org
