This morning, starting at 6:45, John Bartelme visited the pond at Catalina Regional Park, It was quiet at first, perhaps because of the hawks, the both took off, and shortly birds began to come to the water. Shortly after 8AM, Iwe saw a Tanager at the little pond in the park. It was orange-red through the head and breast; the belly was mostly the same with a little bit of yellow. Two well defined white wing bars eliminates Summer Tanager, and possibly Western.
Consulting with several people so far has Flame-colored leading the pack, but some kind of interbreeding could also explain it. Three photos are on the eBird checklist under the hotspot "Catalina Regional Park” Never got and angle on the mantle.
Other than that bird: a flock of 14 Woodhouse’s Scrub Jays flew over heading SSW (Toward Catalina State Park). An immature plumage Gray Hawk, Great-horned Owl, Cooper’s Hawk, Blue and Black-headed Grosbeaks, Warbling Vireos, Lazuli Buntings, many Western Tanagers, Yellow-breasted Chat, Orange-crowned, Yellow and Wilson’s Warblers, a Rufous Hummingbird at the inlet pipe. An Anna’s Hummingbird bathing in the inlet pipe,( Much like the one I saw doing that a few days ago.…. And a few little brown jobs that we didn’t quite get a clear look at.
