The Louisiana Waterthrush in Poway continued Saturday through the late morning hours. See the many previous posts with exact coordinates, etc. When I arrived at 10AM the bird had just come out in the open toward the top (north) end of the stretch of cement-lined channel that it frequents--blissfully walking around in the water and finding lots of food. Was quite content, until a couple photographers felt the need to walk briskly right up on top of the bird, twice flushing it, the second time then having it disappear for 40 minutes. It was then re-found in the triple culvert under Aubrey Street at the south end of its favored stretch. And I mean IN the culvert, where it walked up and down, inside and difficult to see, feeding, for a good 15 minutes before finally leaving to the north and then put on a great show 100-150 feet north of there out in the open. All folks need to do is walk up very slowly on the bird and leave a reasonable buffer space. They still get great photos. The entire length of the cement channel from the Aubrey culverts to the next culverts to the north is about 200+ yards, and the bird works essentially this entire stretch.
There have been a large number of Common Gallinules for the past week at Dairymart in the TRV, as there were at this exact time of year in a couple previous recent years. My count today was 51 birds, which I believe may be an all-time record for a single area: 39 on the main pond, 10 on the east pond, and 2 on the middle/stick pond.
