The trend of increasing Amazona sp. counts in Irvine area seems to be fairly consistent and increasing over the last 5 years or so. I first took note of this in 2020. This year has been notably greater than others. There have been massing Amazona sp. around UCI this year, where I cant recall more than a handful of birds appearing occasionally in prior years.
This year in Irvine, the numbers have gotten large enough that my non-birding fiancé has even commented about this, "there's been a lot of parrots as of late" and "the parrots and the crows are fighting over roosting space". Tonight was particularly of note, when our apartment complex (in a rather industrial/warehouse-y area of town) was graced by ~100 Amazona sp. heavily associating with our routine murder of American Crows heading to roost (heading to San Joaquin?). These two groups seemed to be moving together in a rather raucous group, and the moment the crows departed, the parrots left with them. If anyone knows any literature documenting this association, please send it my way. This was the largest group I've personally seen in OC outside of the Santa Ana roost, and I certainly hope they do not choose my apartment as their new home.
