Observation start time: 09:45:00 Observation end time: 14:45:00 Total observation time: 5 hours
Official Counter: Rob Woodward
Observers:
Visitors: 19 visitors, several of whom were interested in the project. When I told one gentleman I was hawk watching he asked: "Any particular breeds?" Me: "Breeds? Well, yes, spaniels and beagles mostly." (No, I didn't really say that!)
Weather: Mostly clear with high thin clouds spreading south to north, providing some needed backdrop; favorable light NW winds with some W winds by 1:30 then returning to NW; 57 - 70 F.
Raptor Observations: I was eager to get the new season underway, this is the earliest start date for the Alton Bay Hawk Watch, now starting its 6th season. A nice variety of breeds or species if you will. As at Pack, Sharp-shins outnumbered Broad-wings, but look for that comparison to turn around in a few days. Important milestone: today at 10:30 I logged my 500th hour of hawk watching here at Alton Bay. Later this month we will count the 10,000th raptor. Be there for the big celebration!
Non-raptor Observations: One flock of 13 ravens and 2 somewhat unexpected Chimney Swifts.
Predictions: East winds dominate the next 2 days so I will resume the watch on Thursday. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Rob Woodward (<toucanrob...>)
