Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] More info on the Louisiana Waterthrush in Poway
Hi,

Here is more info on the Louisiana Waterthrush in Poway.

First, sorry about not sending updates while I was out there. I thought
I did, but it turns out I sent them only to myself. Nancy filled in the
gap after noticing my messages hadn't gone anywhere.

Just posted my list with photos, and to me it looks good for Lousiana.
Guess we'll see.

I first found it while standing on the bridge that runs between the
northern part of Aubrey Park and the Midland Road sidewalk here:
32.972937, -117.036261

Saw a bird with underside streaking foraging and bobbing in the concrete
drainage channel. Assumed it was a Northern Waterthrush until I got
really good looks and looked at some photos I took, and then thought it
looked like a Louisiana. So I texted Paul some back of the camera shots
to get confirmation before sending out any messages. He also thought
Lousiana based on what he could see in what I was able to text.

It worked a long stretch of the channel from north of the bridge where I
first saw it, all the way into the very first part of the creek in Old
Poway Park.

It spent some time under and around this bridge:
32.97192,-117.03627

It also spent a fair amount of time wandering in the concrete drainage
pipes that run under Aubrey Street, maybe to get out of view of us.
Aubrey Park side of the drainage pipes are about here:
32.971209, -117.036293

Initially I thought it wasn't bothered by me, but I'm realizing now that
it probably was, which is why it kept moving south in the channel as I
followed it. A few times it flew into trees for very brief periods,
including one on the other side of Midland Rd.

It seemed to be on a serious food mission, foraging and eating quite a
bit for long periods. At one point it apparently got tired and maybe
felt a little full and stopped to rest for a few minutes, after which it
went back to foraging.

If people go looking for it over the weekend, please have some
consideration for the bird and other birders and keep a little distance
so it doesn't decide to leave. I heard that someone or someones went
down into the channel after it later in the afternoon. It was plenty
close enough from the sidewalk for good looks and good photos. If a
reasonable distance is kept, it will sometimes stay in one place if it's
finding food. It was pigging out so much, hard to say if it was tanking
up and will leave tonight, or if it will stick around.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
