Northern Waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis) (2) CONFIRMED
- Reported Sep 05, 2025 08:40 by Petra Clayton
- Hardie Park/Cayucos Creek (Ocean Ave Bridge to Hwy 1 Bridge), Cayucos, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.9062489&<ll...>,-120.9062489
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S271659731
- Media: 20 Photos
- Comments: "Continuing species since 9/4/25 (Steve Tillmann).
Two individuals were observed at the same time (from 8:39 a.m. to 8:49 a.m.) at two different locations in the creek bed.
Petra photo-/videographed one foraging bird along a small remnant of water up-creek, east of the Highway One bridge. At the same time Jack took photos and videos of a second bird further down-creek, west of the Highway One bridge, along another shallow body of water.
Both individuals looked alike in the field: Chocolate-brown crown, nape, back, wings (no wingbars) and tail; cream-colored supercilium and arc under the eye; cream-colored throat (with dark spots); thin dark malar stripe; cream-colored breast, belly, and flanks with crisp dark streaking; unmarked whitish undertail coverts; dusky pink legs; slender dark bill. Both were frequently bobbing their tails and flipping vegetation as they foraged.
Looking at the photos/video clips in an attempt to discern a difference between the two individuals, it appears that the supercilium of the bird seen east of the highway bridge is narrower at the end (photos # 6 - #11 below).

Click on the image below for a Flickr video, which includes the clock times of the two parallel observations, followed by subsequent additional observations west of the Highway One bridge:

Photos #1 - 5 below show the individual observed west of the Highway One bridge at the same time that the individual in Photos #6 - #11 was observed east of the Highway One bridge.
Photos #12 - 20 show an individual that was observed later, also west of the Highway One bridge."
