Interesting article Lynn and if you add to this the increasing levels of
CO2 in the atmosphere which tends to accelerate the growth of woody plants
at the expense of grasses, it helps explain the changes taking place in the
American prairie where just maintaining habitat rather than actually
modifying it is becoming more challenging. I manage my property for
grassland birds - Bobolink, E. Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow - and promote
goldenrod, milkweed and joe pye weed on the edges while fighting back woody
invasives like multiflora rose, great willowherb and honeysuckle. Every
year it gets harder and I get older. LOL
