Subject: Greenbrier Co. Blue Grosbeak
Yesterday I had an exciting encounter with a Blue Grosbeak. I was sitting in a chair listening and watching for birds near a neighbor's cattle feeding area when I heard the distinct song. The non-breeding male came into sight, first at the top of a small tree, then to an outbuilding and finally to a tall patch of cocklebur. This gave me ample opportunity to get a few photos in good light. When the bird left the immediate area I continued to hear it sing so I recorded it with my phone. It made 5 "metallic-sounding" chips followed by the song. This was repeated many times. The vocalization continued for some time before it finally faded. That was certainly an enjoyable experience!
