We birded Whitewood Valley, St. Onge and Sale Barn road, then returned via NE of Spearfish and back home. Good weather and 32 species. Eastern Kingbirds were the most plentiful bird and sighting. Raptors included Sharp-shinned and Red Tailed Hawks and Kestrels.. Other sightings of interest included numerous Sharp-tailed Grouse, Common Nighthawk, Belted Kingfisher, Loggerhead Shrike, Western Kingbirds, Barn and Tree Swallows, Marsh Wren, and Lark/White-crowned Sparrows.
We went to Wyoming to avoid the Motorcycle Rally and came back to empty feeders at our home 1.5 miles south of Whitewood.. American Goldfinches, Robins, Red Crossbills were present before we left but have not returned. Most of the other summer regulars are back, but in smaller numbers and we have fewer birds at the feeders. We see Mountain Bluebirds along our walk on Crook City Rd. Our only new bird for August was the American Redstart.
