The American Ornithologists' Union has published their annual bird checklist and South Dakota has gained a species. Warbling Vireo has been split into two species - Eastern Warbling Vireo and Western Warbling Vireo. Both breed in South Dakota. Western vireos are in the Black Hills, generally above 5000', usually in mixed aspen/birch/pine areas. The rest of the state has Eastern Warbling Vireos, where they generally are found in cottonwood stands. Their songs are quite different; differences in appearance are more subtle.
