Manhattan, N.Y. City - Sunday, July 27th -
A rather unusual, both for location and particularly for middle of calendar summer in this county - sighting with photos obtained - M. Waldron - was of a younger-aged, likely less-than breeding age Common Loon, off Sherman Creek in the Harlem River - which is a small park and bay of sorts between the eastern terminus of Dyckman Street and southwest of 207th St., in upper Manhattan. This is tidal and thus would be very brackish water, but loons are regularly seen even in summer, at some coastal sites in summer - more often if found at this season, near-coastally in N.Y. City or around Long Island NY. - i.e., it is uncommon to rare to find a loon in freshwater in the coastal areas near here at this time of year - and this one was not at freshwater. A Least Sandpiper was noted from the Hudson River Park south of W. Houston Street, off lower Manhattan. 2 American Oystercatchers were noted for Sunday, a bit east of Manhattan, looking to South Brother Island, which lies out from Randalls Island. The former site has been a regular site for that species for this season.
In Manhattan - on the island plus its adjacent waters, and in skies above or adjacent - up to 75 or more species of wild birds were seen on Sunday, and of those over 60 species were noted from Central Park alone by multiple independent observers. There were at least 11 species of migratory American warblers in Manhattan on Sunday, with 10 or more at Central Park alone as well as the 50 or more additional native birds seen there on Sunday. Somewhat higher numbers of species were found in all of N.Y. County for Sunday.
More to report on with some cooler air later this week, and with the start of August.
Good birding to all,
Tom Fiore
