Subject: [cobirds] Cassin's Kingbird in Elbert Co.

Hello all,

On the afternoon of July 16, Mike Henwood, Rob Raker and I birded along roads in Elbert Co. East of Kiowa, we went north from Highway 86 on Rd. 93 to Rd. 122, then east to Ridge Road, and north to Rd. 150, and west to West Bijou Creek, where our birding came to an end due to strong winds and heavy rain.

As we started up Rd. 93, the third bird we saw was a Cassin’s Kingbird. We stopped by a cottonwood, where there two adults and two juveniles. One was sitting on a nest, and the other perched nearby. As we continued, we kept seeing more Cassin’s Kingbirds. All told, we counted an astounding 65 Cassin’s Kingbirds along this route. We were careful not to double count individual birds. Some of the birds were clearly juveniles. Most were seen, although a few were only heard. They were easy to tell, with dark heads, dark chests and a conspicuous contrasting white throat, and tails without white sides and with a narrow pale band at the end. The birds were very vocal, and we were constantly hearing the rough, burry Cassin’s call that is different from the Western. Most of the birds were seen in open areas with scattered trees, mostly pines.

Along Rd. 150, we also saw a family group of Northern Mockingbirds, and there was a beautiful adult male Orchard Oriole where Rd. 150 crosses West Bijou Creek.

Below are links to our ebird checklists. The first checklist has a selection of excellent photos of Cassin’s Kingbirds taken by Rob; hopefully other photos will be added to the other checklists in the near future.
