Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City -
into Sunday, July 20th -
While some of the birds being found in Central Park by this weekend include individuals that may have been lingering from late spring into summer and also a wide variety of breeding species and visitors, there are also some definite migrants, including a minimum of 7 American warbler species. Also appearing again are Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and a few rather-early Empidonax-genus flycatchers which did not appear to have lingered all thru the past 4 to 6 weeks. A rather significant portion of recent migration and the widest variety of migrants have been showing in areas of the park apart from The Ramble, although at least some migrants have.
Both species of Waterthrush were found in the park by Saturday, although the majority of these are, as-expected, Louisiana Waterthrushes. Yellow Warblers have been coming thru for some time already, but more are showing just now, thru this weekend. Northern Parula, Worm-eating Warbler, and still another Chestnut-sided Warbler are among the species slightly less-expected for this part of July, although Worm-eating can be a very early southbound migrant - while, at the same time, it is a species expanding its northern range and some individuals may start to come later and later as that expansion potentially goes along in this modern era.
A modest number of Ruby-throated Hummiungbirds were lingering all this month so far, in Manhattan, including several within Central Park, and at least a few of those are either ongoing, and-or new individuals have been coming along, for their southbound seasonal flights and stopovers.
The shorebirds are of course moving well now and both Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers have each returned thru Central Park, with many other shorebirds moving daily in the wider region and some, recently, within N.Y. County. Laughing Gulls continue to show nicely at the Central Park reservoir, as they have almost daily for many weeks, this summer.
Far more of migration in N.Y. County to be reported on soon.
Good birding,
