This message is good news/bad news. The California Bird Records Committee has reviewed two recent submissions from Santa Barbara County, one being accepted, one not accepted (identification not established).
The bad news is the long-awaited decision on the "Glossy Ibis" found in May of 2024 at Goleta Slough. This record is not accepted- identification not established after two rounds of circulation. This ibis has been stuck in eBird review all these months, waiting for confirmation by the CBRC. These records will be marked not valid as Glossy Ibis, but these entries still have value in eBird. Many contained excellent photographs. What the CBRC website doesn't detail is whether the committee felt the bird was a hybrid. This should be covered in a future publication of Western Birds. I would request that those of you who care about such things please change your eBird list to the Glossy/White-faced Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus/chihi) option rather than as a hybrid until we have confirmation that a likely hybrid was involved.
